It's all go innit?
I'm as busy as a one legged guy in an arse kicking competition - thank goodness we have 5 days at sea after we leave Langkawi tonight.
During my Heritage trail excursion (rice museum - hmm! Even turned a coelliac off!) I was able to note once again what a bunch of gauche self conscious passengers we are in the presence of other cultures. Our fear, distrust mixed with a liberal dose of racism shines through. Even amongst ourselves we are an old cantankerous and infirm bunch.
Part of the tour visited Mahathir Mohammed's "gift" museum. Rather odd really as they are gifts to him from other countries - 20,000 of them! This included about 20 motor vehicles - surely a bit more than a symbolic gift! Still he was a recalcitrant guy wasn't he!
I saw more of the difference in people today rather than the tourist products on offer. Our bunch - mainly fat old men and women - walking knock-kneed to support their weight, whilst the locals were slender and the women petite. Friday (today) is the Muslim Holy Day so thankfully most of the shops were closed!
Langkawi from the see and ashore is a strikingly beautiful place - 99 islands at high water (104 at low water). Unfortunately the place is spoiled by litter everywhere along the roads, shanties built to no regulations or standard and generally untidy. Or is that my anal retentive nature (3rd grade) showing through?
Everyone here has motor scooters. The spectacle of a family of four rising one motor scooter is scary! One little kid standing in front of father with another kid standing in front of mother on the pillion seat!

Thanks Bazza, good to hear from you. Apart from minor thiongs like trees across roads, was there any property damage in Merimbula??
ReplyDeleteSteaming into the teeth of a 30 knot wind with rising seas - the ship is actually moving - with our own 20 knots, added to the wind there is a 50 knot wind on deck!
Give my regards to the lads at the Club.
Sounds like fabulous kite flying weather!! Just my 2 cents.
